I consider that the actual source of puzzle itself, as the Publii themselves stated, is in the music, lyrics, and the artwork, but the notice of the puzzle and its nature, is also elsewhere, especially in these three scrambled posts.

So, it's not necessary to solve this one riddle, which might very well be solved using a software version of the Enigma machine (available online at one time). If so, you might consider that the final scrambled post with this information...

holds the information necessary to decode the rest. Of course, the decryption may easily end up being something like "you are here, so what" with the real message being the alphanumeric transition representing the bilateral assymetry of the head so prominent already on almost every page of the cd booklet.

So, I'm not really looking to draw you into it, except that of all the enigmatics since 1994, that I am aware of, you are the most drawn to cryptography. And who knows, maybe there is a 'key' there to the rest there after all. As there is a shape of a key.

Or maybe it is merely pointing to a qi.

If the Publius Enigma is, as I strongly suspect, most importantly, a test of nascent perceptual abilities, then what can be discerned by the supremely gifted from the first 1:09 of 'Cluster One' will be crucial to the solution.

At 1:09 I can clearly hear "Call me right now" as it emerges from the diminishing noise. Before that point in the song I won't say what I think I hear, and what I hear is audible and understandable by me only by removing the noise from the signal by artificial means.

No, not coy... I was just musing on your left brain/right brain line of thinking and considering how it fits with the album cover. It's all well enough. Then I considered other such matching heads and thought of the "A Great Day for Freedom" art, where the left head (or, perhaps, the left hemisphere) is clearly presented as inferior to the right. The left head has an X on it. I summed up the whole stream of thought into a statement.

In regards to Cluster One, ya, that's tricky. That's part of the malformation I was referring to. If you are trying to bury something that you can hear in the mix, you'll bury it far lower than is necessary because you will ALWAYS hear it, because you know it's there. Even if it is gradually eliminated from the mix entirely, your brain will put it back in because it knows it is there. We see how hard it is to notice, say, a helicopter sound which is plain as frikkin' day in the mix, because we are distracted. Try to bury a sound too much, and... well... I've had no luck in pulling anything out of C1 to date. At least not to everyone's satisfaction that what I think is there is in plain hearing.

Begs the question: Can we train ourselves to introduce noise into our perceptions to increase our perceptual ability, i.e. a natural talent enhanced by training, e.g. biofeedback.

I was meaning to try going the other way with C1 after I watched that... only, I had forgotten. After all this time trying to de-noise and de-clutter the foreground to hear the background audio -- perhaps introducing noise is the better way to go.

Absolutely. But that ambient background noise and directed enhancement are not necessarily mutually exclusive. It could be that it is a natural process and ongoing, and unconscious--until we make it conscious.

I remember when I speculated at publiusenigma.com that there are stereograms in the artwork you 'corrected' me, or offered an alternative, saying there are or may be instead 'impressions' (impressionism) hidden in the pages.

I tried filtering the light to make what I thought I saw more visible without success.

Maybe visual noise introduced to our perceptual data somehow would make the impressions clearer.

Still think there might be 'magic eye' pix though.



Syncopa might have some input on the aural spectrum, via binaural beat, etc.

I wouldn't have corrected you, but I certainly do offer alternatives to think through. There's no point in correcting someone on a subject you're not intimately familiar with -- and nobody is familiar enough with P.E. (save Publius and the original author) to make such a claim of familiarity.

What I recall suggesting was that there might be a steganographic encoding which could be derived from the comparison of an encoded text versus a control text. That is to say, while specific kerning of one text would be impossible to note on its own, we have two texts to compare, and you could encode a message this way. At the same time, I was examining the possibility of stereographic images being encoded via the combination of the UK and US releases (eg. one document holds the right eye image while the other holds the left).

I've also noted (though probably not publically), that zero-summing the UK and US releases clearly reveals that at least one of them was mastered to tape.

Certainly possible. But to what end?

I did a left-eye/right eye stereo-illusion recently of a pair of shoes. When each image is considered on its own, there is nothing special about them... it's just a boring, old pair of shoes. However, when they are viewed together in 3D, it appears that one shoe hovers about 4" off the ground.

The most sensible arrangement of those should be ]ICE or ]IBE. Or, if taken in reverse, ECH] which could be ECHO (or, 7412). I see nowhere in the rest of that passage that could match up.

The only candidate I see is in the "NCE" of concern which should be ]712 not ]412.

I'm sorry. This has all been done before. There is an original extant post from which the three scrambled messages were derived. They are available if not in original on ampf, then copied to other archives.

I'll try to find it/them and post them.

The problem therefore is not reconstructing the original message, but divining what the intention was in sending deliberately and nonrandomly altered reposts.
